Adjustment Counselor
Hello, my name is Mrs. Buel. I am the School Adjustment Counselor at Heritage! I love working with elementary students through classroom social emotional learning lessons and small group counseling. I also collaborate with school staff and parents in order to best meet the needs of our students.
I am also the 504 coordinator for the school.
Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns regarding your child.

School Year Information from the Nurse
Dear Heritage School Families,
Welcome back to an exciting new year of learning. It is wonderful to see our student’s happy and healthy faces. Please call, visit the nurse, or send in notes with updates on health care issues concerning your child. Refer to the bottom of this page for School Nurse notes and forms. Here are just a few reminders:
- Face masks must be worn in the school health office.
- Ill Children: Keep sick children at home. A child who has had a fever, diarrhea or vomiting should stay at home to rest for 24 hours after symptoms have subsided to ensure recovery and reduce the spread of disease in the school. Children with questionable skin rashes need to see a doctor and a note is needed stating “non-contagious” or “being treated” upon return to school.
- Communicable ailments: Please keep the school nurse informed of strep throat, COVID-19 and other highly communicable ailments. Any child with a fever of 100.0 or greater will be sent home. Strep throat and pink eye should be treated with antibiotic therapy 24 hours before your child can return to school.
Thank you for your help to keep your children healthy and ready to learn. Please call, write a note, or e-mail with any questions or concerns about your child’s health care needs during school hours.
Vison screenings will be done on grades 2-4 students, hearing screenings on grade 2 & 3 students and heights & weights on grade 4 students. You may opt your child out of these screenings by sending written notification to mgerrard@dcrsd.org or a paper note to school.
Healthy Foods: We promote healthy snacks every day and this means Healthy Celebrations as well. We ask all families to avoid sending in any baked goods, whether home or commercially prepared, this will have the added benefit of protecting students who have food allergies, diet restrictions or chronic diseases. See our healthy snack/celebration attached sheet for food suggestions. Instead of food classrooms celebrate birthdays with special book readings, stickers, pencils etc. Teachers have great ideas and your planning is welcome as well!
Grade 3 & 4 Physical Exams: Massachusetts State law mandates children in 3rd grade have proof of a physical exam with in the past 18 months. All grade 3 and 4 students must have a physical exam prior to May 2023. Your child’s healthcare provider’s forms are acceptable. Please indicate on the enclosed form if you will have your child’s healthcare provider perform this physical examination requirement or the school doctor. Many have already sent back the completed physical form, those are on file in the nurse’s office, thank you so much.
Medication Policy: The medication policy approved by the school committee requires all medications that require dispensing during school hours be brought to the school by an adult in a pharmacist’s labeled container. Consent forms must be signed by the child’s parent/guardian to allow the nurse to administer the medication and medication orders from the health care provider must be signed and received as well. DO NOT send medication on the bus with your child.
The Smile Mobile Dentist Program will be offered at school. Forms will be going home and you may sign up electronically as well. The nurse will need parent volunteers for the morning and afternoon clinic, email me please if you can help.
Clothing changes at school occur often. The nurse needs size 8 and 10 sports pants for children. Please send gently used outgrown elastic/stretchy waist pants to the nurse. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Marilyn Gerrard, MS, RN
